While you cast this spell, you gradually attune to the Cogwheel created below, using the rules of Attunement. When you cast this spell you touch a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long and choose either Rope or Piston:

Rope: One end of the rope uses 5ft of length to attach itself to a hook or handle you can see and then extends out to a distance up to the range of this spell and remaining rope. There, in an unoccupied space that you can see, it rolls around a grooved wheel, cog or spool made of wood or stone that appears and is up to 5 feet in diameter. If there is enough rope left, the other end moves towards another hook or handle in range, using 5ft of length to attach to it, or otherwise the remaining rope spools securely on the side of the cogwheel.

Piston: As with the Rope option, but instead of spooling on the cogwheel, the excess rope disappears and where the rope touches the cogwheel it attaches there. The spanning rope between the cogwheel and what hooks or other objects that it is attached to becomes entirely solid and capable of pushing the thing it is attached to.

So long as you are within range of the cogwheel and are attuned to it, you can use a Bonus Action to command the cogwheel to stop or continuously rotate clockwise or anticlockwise until it has reached the end of the rope. In this command you can also specify that the cogwheel stops or spins in reverse when a specific visible or audible condition is met within range. The cogwheel will make one full rotation by the start of your next turn, pulling or releasing 15ft of rope per rotation for the Rope option, or pulling and/or pushing 5ft of solidified rope for the Piston option. You can also use a Bonus Action to command a rope or pole end to disconnect from something it is attached to and re-attach to something else that you can see within it's range.

Whether as a rope or piston, the whole engine is capable of pulling or lifting a number of pounds equal to 100 times the spell level used. Each end of the rope where it attaches to another object can't cause damage to the thing it is attached to, and can't be attached to an unwilling creature or something worn or held by an unwilling creature. If it would damage it rather than lift or pull, as in the case of an object that is attached to other things and would be stretched between them, the spell ends and the rope and cogwheel disappear. However, lifting or pulling the thing it attaches to can cause damage to other things at the GM's discretion.

Casting this spell with the same choice of Rope or Piston and the cogwheel in the same location every day for a number of months equal to the spell level will make it permanent.

A successful Strength (Athletics), Dexterity, Intelligence (Arcana) or appropriate Tool check (as determined by your GM) against your Spell DC can either jam the cogwheel or break the rope. A successful matching check to beat the previous check can restore the cogwheel to functionality.

If your attunement to the cogwheel ends, the engine persists for the remaining duration. Any creature that can attune can spend 1 hour with the cogwheel to attune to it and gain the command abilities above. As the caster of this spell, you can touch the cogwheel and use an action to end it's attunement to any other creature. Re-attuning to the cogwheel also only takes 1 minute for you.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you extend the range of this spell by 30ft and require a 60ft longer rope for each slot level above 4th.

* - (A length of rope or chain up to 60ft, which the spell consumes)
