Similar to scrying, this spell allows you to see and hear a creature or place that is, or was at the time, on your current plane of existence. Target a location or creature, and an intended time up to the present. Through the amethyst you see a vision of the target creature, location, or event. For example, you could choose to witness a famous battle; to remember details from an event you were at; to see where someone currently is and what they're doing. You must make a history check, which is modified by how well you know the target and the connection you have to it.

Knowledge

DC Modifier
Secondhand (you have heard of the target or place) +5
Firsthand (you have met the target or been to the place) 0
Familiar (you know the target well or have strong memories of the place) -5

Connection DC Modifier
No connection or description (i.e., witnessing an event that was known to happen, but without any supporting details like who what when where and why) +10
Likeness, picture or painting, possession, garment, or object from the place -4
Body part, lock of hair, bit of nail, or the like; historic object narratively important to the place's history -10

As opposed to scrying, this spell almost always succeeds; however, the degree of success determines the clarity and detail of the events shown, and most importantly, the accuracy of the timeframe. A very high check would clearly show all details and proceedings of an event and at the exact time specified. A reasonable roll would accurately show key details. Lower rolls are likely to not accurately display the target or event, or would show a time before or after the event took place, such as a battlefield days before or after a battle, or if the target were an individual, a likely meaningless vignette from another time in their life.

This spell fundamentally enhances recollection and relies on memory, even if not the caster's memories. Thus, attempting to scry events or things that the caster could describe or supposes happened, but which fundamentally are not in the memories or recollections of people cause this spell to fail (i.e., attempting to scry on the myriad far beyond the iris, or a god, or the beginning of the universe will all fail).
