A spell used to inflict especially heinous torment during interrogations. When you cast this spell, target a creature within range, forcing a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save the creature experiences excruciating pain each time they knowingly tell a lie, inflicting 1d4 points of psychic damage.
If this spell reduces a creature to 0 hit points, they remain conscious and in excruciating, mind-bending pain, forcing disadvantage on all checks and saving throws while they remain at or below 0 hit points; a creature cannot be killed by this spell, only subdued. A creature at this stage falls unconscious if they take damage from another source, or if they take at least 10 additional damage from this spell.
When a creature takes damage from this spell, they must make a Charisma saving throw. On a successful saving throw the spell does not end, but the creature becomes aware of the nonlethal nature of the spell.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the duration is concentration, up to 10 minutes. If you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the duration is 8 hours. If you use a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the duration is 24 hours. If you use a 9th level spell slot, the spell lasts until it is dispelled. Using a spell slot of 5th level or higher grants a duration that doesn't require concentration.
