Directly from the Elemental Plane of Fire you conjure a black smoke cloud filled with volcanic ash and fire sparks. the cloud is centered on yourself swirling around you in a 10-foot-radius sphere whose area is heavily obscured. If concentration is interrupted the cloud remains in the area where it was until your next turn or until a strong wind disperses it, if not the smoke cloud follows you with you as its center. Each creature that starts its turn in the area takes 3d4 fire damage and can't talk as long as it remains within the cloud. Creatures who don't need to breathe take half damage and are unaffected by the smoke.
At Higher levels
When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 2d4 for each slot level above 2nd.

Posted May 21, 2021Once the spell is used the caster may see only within its close vicinity (5ft) without being able to see through the smoke.
the spell is often used by casters that have taken this into account by equipping items that allow to see through heavy darkness, but still it can be used without such an item, using the spell as a distraction, by moving the cloud where needed and then leaving it there to disrupt enemies' strategies and attack patterns.
The spell though is most notoriously used by paladins associated with flames/fire , that cast this spell within great groups of enemies making themselves walking calamities, attacking anything in direct proximity caring not about losing concentration or even intentionally breaking it (since it doesn't break the spell but only fixes it in place).
