Chains of the Covenant calls upon the ancient rites of Valythera, binding the soul of the deceased to the mortal world. Unlike traditional resurrection spells, this one forges a chain between life and death, demanding yearly maintenance to keep the soul anchored and mindful.
Upon casting, the deceased is revived with all their memories and capabilities. However, this return comes with the need for an annual ritual to reaffirm their ties to the living realm. Without this ritual, the resurrected begins a gradual descent into madness, eventually becoming a mindless undead creature driven by a hunger for the life they can no longer possess.
-
Covenant’s Maintenance: Every year, on the anniversary of their resurrection, the resurrected must partake in a ritual that reaffirms their bond to the living world. This ritual requires the presence of the original caster and consumes a gem worth at least 100 gp.
-
Veil of Sanity: For each year the ritual is performed, the resurrected retains their intellect, emotions, and memories, shielding them from the decay into undeath. Failure to perform the annual ritual initiates the decay of their mental faculties, leading to irreversible transformation into an undead over the course of a month.
- The spell cannot resurrect individuals who have been dead for more than a century or those who died of old age.
- The resurrected returns with only half of their physical capabilities, requiring 1d6 months to return to full strength.
- Lost body parts are not restored, and the spell does not remove curses, but does remove diseases and poisons that afflicted the individual at the time of death.
- The resurrected gains poison immunity and their creature type changes to undead.
