When you cast this spell, touch up to 6 surfaces or objects, inscribing them with one of two marks, those being either the cardinal mark or the pointing mark. These marks can be up to 1 foot in diameter, and glow with a soft magical radiance.
The cardinal mark does nothing on its own, but it is essential for the pointer marks to function. Pointer marks always point to the nearest cardinal mark within 5 miles of them, appearing as a magical arrow on whatever surface it was inscribed on. Wise parties divvy up stones inscribed with these marks to help keep track of one another in unknown environments, but they have other uses as well.
If this spell is recast on the same objects/surfaces every day for a month, it becomes permanent. If a pointer mark is ever more than 5 miles away from a given cardinal mark, it vanishes and the spell ends on whatever item it was cast on, regardless of permanence.
