When cast, all magical energy is devoted to creating magical layers for attack or defense. You gain magical barrier charges equal to your Intelligence or Wisdom modifier, whichever is higher. At level 1 each barrier charge is equivalent to 1d4. When you take damage a charge is consumed to reduce damage by 1d4. As a reaction you can expend additional charges, one for each die. When you successfully hit with a melee attack you can take a bonus action to expend a charge for additional 1d4 damage. While charges are active you cannot cast additional spells. Active concentration spells cast at a level higher than your Aegis cast remain active. Even if you reduce damage to 0 you must make a saving throw to maintain concentration. This spell cannot be cancelled early and cannot be stacked.
When cast at a higher level the die is increased by one for all charges. At level 2 all charges are 1d6, at level 3 they are 1d8, all the way to level 6 at d20. Any cast above level 6 adds you proficiency bonus per level past 6. Level 7 would be proficiency bonus added to damage reduc/dealt. Level 8 would be proficiency bonus times 2 added.
Caster suffers one level of exhaustion after charges are used up. On subsequent cast an additional level of exhaustion will be suffered.

Posted Jul 22, 2020If this is a shielding spell, should it be allowed to add damage?

Posted Jul 22, 2020Wow resurrecting a dead one here lol. I abandoned this one so long ago on this site. I've since playtested and tweaked it a lot
To answer your question, not necessarily. The first line says you create magical layers for attack or defense. It's not just a shield spell. Historically the name is tied to shields, yes. But historically shields are also capable of being used for an attack. Shield bashing someone can be potent and dangerous
Also, using this spell for damage reduces a charge and thus lowers your overall defense
The name may imply Shielding Spell only but the spell Burning Hands by name only would apply an incendiary touch rather than the flamethrower that it is

Posted Jul 22, 2020Fair enough, names aren't limits. ;p
As for a bit of necro, I just found the site, so I'm scrolling through the spell list to find anything interesting.

Posted Jul 22, 2020Hey no problem! This site is pretty awesome and has some interesting stuff. Great start to the DnD life for sure! I just found it entertaining that this homebrew got more attention in death than in life :D
If you're looking for interesting things I would suggest some of the following subreddits if you haven't already checked them out:
r/dndnext (focuses on all things 5e including homebrew, mechanics, roleplay fun, etc)
r/monstersandmulticlass (subreddit for the Monsters and Multiclass podcast on spotify. Great for multiclass and monster ideas and a great exposure to class mechanics)
r/3d6 (an optimization or minmax focused subreddit for class design)
