You create six tiny meteors in your space. They float in the air and orbit you for the spell’s duration. When you cast the spell — and as a bonus action on each of your turns thereafter — you can expend one or two of the meteors, sending them streaking toward a point or points you choose within 120 feet of you. Once a meteor reaches its destination or impacts against a solid surface, the meteor explodes. Each creature within 5 feet of the point where the meteor explodes must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the number of meteors created increases by two for each slot level above 3rd.

Posted Feb 6, 202612d6 total Damage is huge for a 3rd level spell, even in single target. It's as much as all 12 arrows from Flame Arrows combined. Butthis spell isn't fully single target, each Meteor has a little AoE. And it even does half damage on successful saves.
Now, the damage must be spread out over at least 3 turns (unless you can convince your DM to let you launch 2 meteors as a bonus action on the turn you cast the spell, in addition to launching 2 of them as part of the spell's casting like the description says), and you have to concentrate during that time, which does make the spell a fair bit less appealing. After all, damage now is better than damage later, and concentration is a powerful resource. But at least you can launch the meteors with your bonus action on later turns, and since you're not actually casting the spell on the later turns, you can also use leveled spells on said later turns.
And since the duration is decent, you cast the spell in advance if you're expecting combat soon. In which case the spell is a fair bit better, especially for damage nova/nuking based strategies, due to not needing that initial action, allowing you to add two 2d6 mini AoEs on top of whatever turn 1 burst damage that you'd normally do with say, Fireball. Plus, it can be hard or impossible to pre-cast many of the concentration spells that would usually be more impactful, like Hypnotic Pattern.
