Posted Apr 29, 2024Designer's Note: Let's talk math. In standard combat, advantage on a single attack is almost always less damage than two normal attacks. Believe it or not, rolling an additional 3d20 on a single attack also usually does less damage than two normal attacks, even accounting for the higher crit chance, unless you have less than a 50% chance of hitting with a normal attack. With bounded accuracy, having less than 50% chance to hit happens less often than might be thought. While rolling an additional 3d20 may seem excessive at first glance, in most standard fights True Strike is a net decrease in DPR. And that's not even taking into account the opportunity cost of using your action to cast a cantrip which heavily incentivizes a certain type of follow-up action or waste the action, rather than doing anything else. This ends up being a somewhat niche spell which is great in several niches, but hardly mandatory. Good, but not outstanding.
