You draw your fingers across the weapon you used in the casting of this spell, leaving behind a residue of chromatic energy on its ammunition.  You choose acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, or thunder for the type of residue you create, then make a ranged weapon attack. If the attack hits, the creature takes the attack's normal damage except the damage type is of the kind chosen in the casting of this spell. (For example, if fire was chosen with a longbow the attack would deal 1d8 plus ability modifier fire damage).

At Higher Levels. At 5th level, the ranged attack deals an extra 1d8 damage to the target on a hit of the chosen damage type. The damage roll increases by 1d8 at 11th level (2d8) and again at 17th level (3d8).

(Note: The alteration to damage type modifies all damage sources that inherit the weapon attack's damage type, such as a Rogue's Sneak Attack, the bonus damage from the Sharpshooter feat, or the spell Hunter's Mark. This spell does not affect the damage type of sources applied to the weapon attack that already had a damage type such as the Hex spell).

* - (A ranged weapon worth at least 1sp)
