The caster selects two consenting creatures within 5 feet (whose Intelligence must be 6 or higher) to form a magical contract. The Arcane Contract takes the form of a number of sealed scrolls equal to the number of participants in the contract, and as long as all the scrolls remain intact, both creatures must adhere to the agreement. The spell ends under the following conditions: the caster is killed, the scrolls are destroyed, or one of the parties breaks the pact. In the latter case, the creature that breaks the pact takes a number of d12 damage equal to the combined level (or CR) of the two creatures; the type of damage inflicted by breaking the contract is at the discretion of the caster.

The contract consists of 2 clauses. The clauses cannot be overly long or complex, and the DM may decide if a clause is valid or needs to be reformulated or divided into more clauses. Clauses can alter the functionality of the spell, for example, making the caster's death or the destruction of the scrolls irrelevant for breaking the spell, creating a new way to break the spell, or increasing the amount of damage taken.

The spell normally has a maximum duration of 1 year, and no clause can prolong its effect

Examples of clauses include:

  • X will help Y rescue their sister.
  • The contract will be dissolved when both X and Y are satisfied.
  • X will return 500 gold to Y
  • Y will be punished by the spell if they fail to complete their part of the agreement within 364 days.
  • It is forbidden to harm each other.
  • It is forbidden to do anything that would directly cause damage to the other person.
  • X cannot eat Y's candies without permission.

The only sure way to break the spell is by casting Remove Curse at a level higher than the level of Arcane Contract. If the contract is cast with a 9th-level spell slot, only the Wish spell can dissolve it.

At Higher Levels:

For each level above 2nd, you can add one additional clause to the Arcane Contract or add one consenting person to the agreement. A contract cast at 4th level could therefore involve 3 people and 3 clauses. Alternatively, you can increase the duration of the spell by ten times.
