Seen in only the most forbidden tomes in the libraries of long-dead civilizations this spell is sometimes referred to as "The Devil's Bargain," for indeed it may cost you your soul to accept its "mercy." There are many who would pay the price to return to the mortal world, believing they will somehow due good with the second chance only to find themselves a pawn in the schemes of unfettered evil. Beware the Devil's bargain, for he will always be the one to profit on your sorrow.
You touch a dead creature that has been dead for no more than 150 years, and didn't die of old age. If its soul is free and willing, the target returns to life with 1 hit point. If the soul is willing a bargain can be struck to resurrect the creature.
This spell forms a new body for the target creature upon agreement of terms. Any remaining part of the old body is destroyed in this process.
Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a −2 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Every time the target finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears. This penalty can be removed immediately with a greater restoration spell, or healing magic of sixth level and higher.
Casting this spell to restore life to a creature that has been dead for one year or longer taxes you greatly. Until you finish a long rest, you can't cast spells again, and you have disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
If the soul has agreed to the terms the following can be changed during the resurrection:
Class: The caster can alter the class of the resurrected soul, but not the level. For example, a bard could be brought back as a sorcerer. If the new class requires a patron or contract the resurrected soul chooses it.
Race: Much like the reincarnate spell the race/species of the resurrected soul can be altered, but the caster can choose rather than it being random.
Loyalty: Though the alignment of the creature cannot be forcibly changed by this spell it can force a loyalty compulsion. The creature is aware of this compulsion and can try to resist it by making a wisdom save. Upon success the command is automatically resisted for the next 24 hours no matter how many times that order is given. If the creature is ordered to harm itself it gets advantage on the saving throw and if it succeeds it cannot be compelled for the next 24 hours and can ignore all prior commands for that time.
*A wish spell can undo these alterations. Alternatively, if the creature is slain again and brought back by true resurrection it will have its original class and species, and retain the experience it gained between the deaths.
* - (a diamond worth at least 1,500 gp sown into a doll that resembles the target and contains some part of the dead creature, which the spell consumes)Previous Versions
