An invisible, nearly scentless gas fills a 20 foot sphere at a point you can see within range. The gas spreads around corners. It lasts for the duration or until strong wind disperses the gas, ending the spell.

This spell is difficult to detect, making it a favorite trap for wizards protecting their secret lairs. A creature automatically detects the presence of the vapor if they have a passive Perception equal to or higher than your spell save DC, or if they have especially keen scent (such as a wolf). Otherwise, a creature that succeeds on either a Perception or Survival check can detect the presence of the vapor.

If the gas comes into contact with any flames, magical or mundane, it ignites the gas immediately. Creatures in the area of the spell must make a Dexterity saving throw, suffering 5d6 fire damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. If a creature is unaware of the gas, they make the save at disadvantage.

The vapors, being heavier than air, sink to the lowest level of the land, even pouring down openings.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 per slot level over 3rd. The duration of the spell increases to 8 hours when you cast it at 5th level or higher, 24 hours at 7th level or higher, and permanently if cast at 9th level. When cast at 5th level or higher, the duration of the spell does not require concentration.
