You launch a lightning bolt toward a target you can see within range. Three bolts then leap from that target to as many as three other targets of your choice, each of which must be within 30 feet of the first target. A target can be a creature or an object and can be targeted by only one of the bolts.
Each target makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 10d8 Lightning damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. One additional bolt leaps from the first target to another target for each spell slot level above 6.

Posted Jan 20, 2025I would allow it at my table as a DM, however RAW I don’t believe that interaction was intended because the spell can’t be upcast to target additional creatures.

Posted Jan 5, 2026I think yes. Casting at higher level allows you to target an additional creature.

Posted Feb 2, 2026I’d actually say no consider RAW says “such as Charm Person… to target AN additional creature”
The spell’s intention is to target 1 additional creature with a spell that typically only targets 1 by default, but *can* be upcast to target more. Afaik. I’d probably allow it in the moment 🤷♂️

Posted Feb 9, 2026Personally, I think it counts. Technically, you aren't targeting an additional creature for the main effect, but given how both main and secondary targets receive identical effects' I think that's semantics. In addition, nowhere does it say that the original intention of Twinned spell is to affect only spells that by default only target one creature. That's just assumed because that's how the example they chose works. As a matter of fact, there are several support or utility spells this was blatantly designed to help that target multiple people.
Finally, if you can upcast charm person and still use twinned spell to affect even more creatures, I don't see why not for chain lightning. Especially considering that a 6th level fireball almost as much damage anyway.

Posted Feb 9, 2026Yeah, that was a restriction on the 2014 version of Twinned Spell that was very specifically and deliberately removed from the 2024 version.
Whether this spell counts is sort of an open question due to its wording, but the 2024 Twinned Spell definitely is not limited to spells that already only affect one target.
