Radiant
Flame-like radiance descends on a creature that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 Radiant damage. The target gains no benefit from Half Cover or Three-Quarters Cover for this save.
Cantrip Upgrade. The damage increases by 1d8 when you reach levels 5 (2d8), 11 (3d8), and 17 (4d8).
A dex save isn't as good as an attack roll, so you're probably looking enviously at Firebolt right now but this actually does more damage once you get Radiant Spellcasting. Perhaps not the spell to cast upon goblins though.
You like toll the dead more than this spell. it does more damage after all! But it's also a lot more commonly resisted, and targets the favorite save of every big scary monster. With the two at your disposal, you should have an easy time targeting a weak save, and this spell's radiant damage is very reliable, a lot more so than Firebolt or Toll the Dead.
In 2014 it was likely quite intentional that cleric get no attack roll cantrips, you have a mace after all. In 2024, it's really easy to poach, Shillelagh or True Strike, the later of which being a good choice even if you don't have Divine Smite. Really hard to justify investing in strength in this edition...
