A shimmering green arrow streaks toward a target within range and bursts in a spray of acid. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 4d4 Acid damage and 2d4 Acid damage at the end of its next turn. On a miss, the arrow splashes the target with acid for half as much of the initial damage only.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage (both initial and later) increases by 1d4 for each spell slot level above 2.

Posted Dec 15, 2025No, it has always been Melf's Acid Arrow.
The version of the spell included in the 2014 SRD and Basic Rules was just called Acid Arrow because "Melf" (the character and the name) is a coyprighted bit of IP that they didn't want to put under the SRD license. However, the version included in the 2014 Player's Handbook was called "Melf's Acid Arrow" just like the 2024 version.
This was the same setup used with all of the 2014 5e spells whose name contained a specific character's name: Tasha's Hideous Laughter vs. Hideous Laughter, Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum vs. Private Sanctum, etc.
