You pull wisps of shadow material from the Shadowfell to create an object within range. It is either an object of vegetable matter (soft goods, rope, wood, and the like) or mineral matter (stone, crystal, metal, and the like). The object must be no larger than a 5-foot Cube, and the object must be of a form and material that you have seen.
The spell’s duration depends on the object’s material, as shown in the Materials table. If the object is composed of multiple materials, use the shortest duration. Using any object created by this spell as another spell’s Material component causes the other spell to fail.
| Material | Duration |
|---|---|
| Vegetable matter | 24 hours |
| Stone or crystal | 12 hours |
| Precious metals | 1 hour |
| Gems | 10 minutes |
| Adamantine or mithral | 1 minute |
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The Cube increases by 5 feet for each spell slot level above 5.

Posted Jul 28, 2026If you create a Plate Armor (regular metal), how long does it last?
Could it be created on top of someone already?
Also this spell becomes really interesting if circle casted: like.. couldn't it be circle casted to create a mithral plate armor that lasts 8 hours?

Posted Aug 3, 2026There's a bit of a strange gap there for non-precious metals. If I were DMing I'd probably put it between the "stone" and "precious metals" categories and say 6 hours.
There does not seem to be anything preventing you from creating it on someone (it doesn't say "in an unoccupied space", for instance) but a DM might reasonably require that the person in question stay still for the entire 1 minute of the casting time. Since the casting time is that long, there might not be much benefit over just creating it near them and having them put it on normally.
I also don't see anything that would prevent you from using Circle Casting to prolong the duration.
