I can't believe they still didn't update this spell to be more worth it. They should've taken away the concentration or the material component at the very least.
There's a small buff on this spell. Resistence for any type of bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage instead of no magical. but, being honest, still not worth it. Concentration + material component still a high price to pay.
I'll be honest - I came here to see what people said about it, I don't really understand how Mage Armor is not concentration but Stoneskin & Barkskin (Although had to go make sure and apparently they did take concentration off of Barkskin - haha) does.
Also, no upcasting? 5th level - cast it on two people, ya know?
2024 PHB says this is Transmutation, not Abjuration.
That hardly makes a difference now that any monster with a magic weapon switches to force damage as opposed to magical b/p/s
So, they basically didn't buff it at all.
There are several of us in my campaigns that are grognard's from 1e-3e, back when this spell had hard damage immunity to a # of hits or damage reduction. Implementing such in 5e could indeed be problematic, but wanted to keep the feeling of such. So, adding a Damage Threshold of 5 at our table to make it worth it has been well-received, even when used by tougher foes.
