For the duration, the spell enlarges or reduces a creature or an object you can see within range (see the chosen effect below). A targeted object must be neither worn nor carried. If the target is an unwilling creature, it can make a Constitution saving throw. On a successful save, the spell has no effect.
Everything that a targeted creature is wearing and carrying changes size with it. Any item it drops returns to normal size at once. A thrown weapon or piece of ammunition returns to normal size immediately after it hits or misses a target.
Enlarge. The target’s size increases by one category—from Medium to Large, for example. The target also has Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. The target’s attacks with its enlarged weapons or Unarmed Strikes deal an extra 1d4 damage on a hit.
Reduce. The target’s size decreases by one category—from Medium to Small, for example. The target also has Disadvantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. The target’s attacks with its reduced weapons or Unarmed Strikes deal 1d4 less damage on a hit (this can’t reduce the damage below 1).

Posted Mar 26, 2026I just caught theres no size limit to the object you're casting this on *looks at planet he's standing on*
I can see some shenanigans for reducing a house or cage people are inside of... or a boat people are on. But probably more in line with what a dm would allow, this is great to get past locked doors assuming you never need the door again. Reduce door, door falls out of frame, walk thru.
How does this pair with animate objects? Like if you reduce an object a size then animate it, then drop concentration on reduce, does the animate stats change?

Posted Mar 30, 2026There's nothing in this spell that says it ends if the target is eaten by something.

Posted Mar 30, 2026Unfortunately, the definition of "object" in the Rules Glossary does make it clear that something like a house, or a boat, or a planet is not an "object" in the sense in which the word is used in D&D rules.
I would say that an object animated by Animate Objects always uses the stats associated with its current size, and so if its size were changed after it were animated, the stats would change accordingly. However, since both spells require Concentration, you'd need a second caster to actually make any use of this.

Posted Apr 6, 2026There has never been a size category called "colossal" in either 5e or 5.5e D&D. Perhaps there was in some earlier edition, I'm not sure.

Posted Apr 13, 2026There's no mention of it in the 5e Player's Handbook rules on Creature Size; Gargantuan is specifically defined as "20 by 20 ft. or larger", making it the largest size category.

Posted Aug 5, 2026I recently had a player that wanted to cast it on a lock door to open it. Felt wrong to me but couldn't find a real explanation.
can that spell be use in that way ? Or on the lock or something else to open a lock door ?

Posted Aug 7, 2026With the lack of specifics on size and weight, and only listing a change in category, would I be mistaken in believing this leaves room for players and DM to discuss and decide how much growth/reduction actually happens?
For example going from medium to large. Rather than just doubling height (and increasing weight 8×) you could choose in the casting how much they grow within the limits of size large (8 to 16 feet tall) and increase weight accordingly, via the square cube law?

Posted Aug 10, 2026I would actually say that since the spell doesn't say the target's weight changes, the target's weight doesn't change, but it's certainly a gray area that individual DMs could rule on.

Posted Aug 10, 2026I don't see any reason you couldn't use this spell to reduce the size of a locked door to get past it.
This is a 2nd-level spell, and there is already a 2nd-level spell that unlocks doors (Knock) so it doesn't seem like this usage would be overpowered or anything.

Posted Oct 11, 2026Technically, you have to see what you're casting it on. How you define the lock is a little muddy at that point, whether the locking mechanism and key hole count as the same object or not.
Getting thru a door should be fairly easy though. You could shrink the door itself with this.
That doesn't make this any less powerful though for those shenanigans. Enlarging or reducing a portion of a boat's hull would rip a giant hole in the boat, and the boat sinks. Shrinking a support beam or wall of a building will collapse the building. I suppose you couldn't destroy a planet tho...

Posted Oct 11, 2026How does the enlarge function affect grappling? Under the new grappling rules, the target rolls Athletics or Acrobatics vs a DC based on the attacker's STR and Proficiency. Does the advantage on STR checks from enlarge add 5 to the DC (based on how advantage works on passive numbers)?

Posted Oct 12, 2026They don't exactly "stack" because they do different things, but if you're asking whether the advantage/disadvantage on Strength checks provided by this spell applies to Strength checks you can make with normally non-Strength skills via Primal Knowledge, the answer is definitely yes.

Posted Oct 12, 2026No. The spell doesn't say it does that, so the spell doesn't do that. Having advantage on ability checks with a specific ability has no impact on save DCs calculated using that ability's modifier.
That said, that seems like a very reasonable house rule.
