You attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell. The creature makes a saving throw for the spellcasting ability for that spell. On a failed save, the spell is countered. If the creature is casting a spell of 3rd level or lower, they automatically fail the save.

When a spell is countered, it dissipates with no effect, and the action, Bonus Action, or Reaction used to cast it is wasted. If that spell was cast with a spell slot, the slot isn’t expended.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The creature casting the spell automatically fails their saving throw if the spell slot used to cast the target spell is less than or equal to the level of the spell slot you used.
