You create a veil of viscous acid that springs from the ground in front of you. The veil is 5 feet long, 10 feet high, and 1 inch thick. When you cast the spell you may choose the veil's coloration and whether the acid is opaque or translucent.
The veil grants you full cover against attacks from the direction it faces, and half-cover from attacks made perpendicular to the direction the veil faces. Nonmagical ammunition fired through the veil instantly dissolves, causing ranged attacks through the veil to automatically miss. If the ranged attack uses magical ammunition, it is not dissolved by the veil but the attack is made at disadvantage.
When a creature makes a melee weapon attack against you from the side protected by the veil, or from angles perpendicular to the veil, they take 2d8 acid damage as a result. Likewise, if a creature tries to reach through the veil or grapple you while the veil is active, they take 2d8 acid damage.
At Higher Levels: When cast using a spell slot of 3rd-level or higher, the veil deals an additional 1d8 damage per slot level above 2nd.
