Choose one humanoid that you can see within range. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it is restrained as its flesh painfully begins to unbind from its body and rebind as a book in your hand. On a successful save, the target isn't affected.

A humanoid restrained by this spell must make another Wisdom saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it successfully saves against this spell three times, the spell ends. If it fails its saves three times, it is transformed, along with whatever it is wearing and carrying, into a book for the duration. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until the target collects three of a kind.

The book weighs 10 pounds, has one page for every day of the target's life, and is as durable as a normal book. The cover and binding of the book appear to be made of the target's flesh and are adorned with minor details reflecting the target's appearance, interests, and tastes. Every thought and memory of the target is perfectly transcribed within the pages of the book, even those the target may have forgotten long ago. Such transcription is done in the language the target was thinking or speaking in when the event occurred. If a memory includes dialogue in a language the target didn't understand, that dialogue is reproduced phonetically and must be translated by a reader who knows that language. Any alterations to the target's memories, such as by a modify memory spell, appear in a subtly different script; however, a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check made against the save DC of the memory altering effect uncovers this subtle difference.

Any alterations you make to the target's memories, such as by erasing or adding text or by removing entire pages, persist after the target reverts to its original state. A page containing a target's memories that is removed quickly disintegrates into nothing. The target does not get to make saving throws against any spells cast on it while it is a book, but the target is still considered an object for the purpose of determining which spells affect it. Once returned to its original state, modify memory can be used to repair the target's memories if text was erased or added, but only a wish spell can repair the target's memories if one or more pages were removed.

This spell has no effect on a shapechanger or a creature with 0 hit points. If you maintain your concentration on this spell for the entire possible duration, the transformation lasts until removed by remove curse or similar magic.

Destroying the book immediately slays the target.
