You tear open a rift between the Material Plane and the Ethereal Plane, forcefully separating the bodies and souls of your targets. Choose up to three creatures within range. Each target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the creature is split into two halves: its body (material half) and soul (ethereal half).
The body remains on the Material Plane, paralyzed and frozen in place, unable to move or act. The soul shifts to the Ethereal Plane, where it is isolated and cut off from all contact, perception, or interaction with the Material Plane or any other creature. While separated in this way, the creature suffers a rending of its true essence, taking 5d12 necrotic damage at the start of each of its turns as the forced division strains the connection between body and soul. At the end of each of its turns, the creature must make two Constitution saving throws—one for the body and one for the soul. Both saving throws must succeed for the creature to end the effect and reunite its halves, ending the spell for that creature. On a failure, the creature remains divided and continues to suffer the spell’s effects on subsequent turns.
If the creature’s body is killed while separated from its soul, the soul becomes trapped in the Ethereal Plane. Over time, it manifests as a spectral undead entity—such as a ghost, banshee, or another suitable spirit—at the DM’s discretion, retaining any unresolved memories or emotions of its mortal life.
On a successful initial save, the creature resists full separation but suffers a violent backlash from the attempt, taking 5d12 necrotic damage and suffering disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of its next turn, as the traumatic experience lingers in its mind.
