You summon a mass of writhing vines in a 10-foot square within range. The vines erupt from the ground, twisting and growing to ensnare enemies and create difficult terrain.
If a creature starts its turn restrained by the vines, it takes 1d6 piercing damage from the thorns. The damage increases to 2d6 at 5th level, 3d6 at 11th level, and 4d6 at 17th level. Basically the longer they are trapped the more damage is dealt.

You animate part of the vines into a Vine Guardian, a temporary magical plant creature. It occupies a 5-foot space, has AC 12, HP = 5 + your spellcasting modifier, and deals 1d8 + your spellcasting modifier bludgeoning damage with its slam attack. As a bonus action, you can command it to move 20 feet and attack. It’s immune to poison and psychic damage and can bypass resistances as a magical plant. The guardian lasts for the spell's duration or until its hit points drop to 0.
