You summon a flying, spectral avian that carries a chest in its talons. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the avian has the statistics of a Giant Eagle (Monster Manual), though it is a celestial, fey, or fiend (your choice) instead of a beast and it can't carry anything other than the chest. You can choose the form your avian companion takes as you cast this spell, though they typically take the form of large birds such as cranes or cassowaries.
As an action, you can open the chest the avian carries which functions as an extradimensional storage space with an interior considerably larger than its outside dimensions. You and any creatures you designate when you cast the spell can open the chest. The chest can hold up to 300 pounds. Retrieving an item from the chest requires an action.
The avian will do its best to protect the chest and keep it upright, but if it is overloaded, splintered, or destroyed, its contents are scattered into the astral plane. If the chest is turned over while opened, its contents spill forth unharmed. If the avian is commanded to put the chest into an extradimensional space created by a bag of holding, handy haversack, portable hole, or similar item, the avian will refuse the command. If the chest is instead forced into the extradimensional space, the chest and the item magically repel each other, unable to come into contact.
Your avian acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn. An avian can’t attack, but it can take other actions as normal. If no command is given, the avian will take the dodge action on its turn, protecting its chest. When your avian is reduced to 0 hit points, it and the chest both disappear, leaving behind no physical form and any items stored in the chest are scattered into the Astral Plane. Your avian and a new chest reappear only when you cast this spell again.
As an action, you can temporarily dismiss your avian. It and its chest disappear into a pocket dimension where it awaits your summons. As an action while it is temporarily dismissed, you can cause it and its chest to reappear in any unoccupied space within 10 feet of you. You can't have more than one avian at a time.
At Higher Levels: For each spell slot level above 3rd that you use to cast this spell, the weight the chest can carry increases by 100 pounds, the avian's hit points and hit point maximum increase by 5, and the material cost to cast the spell increase by 25 GP.
