By tasting blood, you forge a visceral connection to its source, unraveling secrets tied to life and death or even empowering yourself temporarily. The effects depend on whether the blood is from a dead or living creature—or your own.

Dead Creature’s Blood

If you consume the blood of a dead creature (no older than 1 hour), you gain the following information:

  • The creature’s cause of death (e.g., physical wounds, poison, magical effects).
  • The creature’s strongest emotion or thought at the moment of its death.

For the duration, you can use your action to focus on the connection and ask one of the following questions about the dead creature:

  • What was its most recent memory before its death?
  • What did it know about a specific person, place, or event? (Specify the subject.)
  • Did it perceive its killer? (If yes, you see a brief flash of the killer as the creature saw them.)

Living Creature’s Blood

If you consume the blood of a living creature, you establish a more immediate and empathetic link. You gain the following benefits:

  • You sense the creature’s current emotional state.
  • You gain a brief flash of its most recent memory, from up to 1 minute ago.
  • For the duration, you can attempt a Wisdom (Insight) check against the creature’s Charisma (Deception) check to glimpse a specific surface thought or concern.

However, consuming the blood of a living creature comes with a risk:

  • Wisdom Saving Throw: You must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13) or take 1d4+1 psychic damage as the act disturbs your sense of morality or reality.
  • Optional Rule for Consent: If the creature willingly allows you to take and taste its blood, the DC is lowered to 10.

Your Own Blood

If you consume your own blood (a drop or injury equivalent to 1 hit point), you gain the following benefit:

  • You strengthen your resolve and self-awareness, gaining advantage on Wisdom saving throws for the spell’s duration.

At Higher Levels.

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can taste the blood of a creature (dead or living) that is up to 24 hours old per spell slot level above 2nd.
