One creature you can see within range must succeed on a constitution saving throw or take on the effects of one level of exhaustion (this does not give the creature exhaustion, and does not add to the severity of preexisting exhaustion). The creature must repeat the saving throw on the beginning of each of its turns. One level of this effect is removed on a success with no effect if the creature has no levels. The effects of one additional level of exhaustion is applied on a failed saving throw. The creature cannot die from this spell, and all of its effects end when the spell ends.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the creature must make one more additional constitution saving throw or take on the effects of one more level of exhaustion (exhaustion or its effects cannot be removed as a result of a successful saving throw) for each slot level above 7th. When casting this spell at 9th level, each failed saving throw applies a level of exhaustion, rather than simply applying the effects, with successes removing one, and the creature can die from this spell. If the spell's duration ends, the levels of exhaustion are not removed.
