You cast the spell on the key used as the material component while in range of a lock. The key will then open that lock, whether it was made for the lock or not, and then it disintegrates into dust. The key will not disable or otherwise mitigate any traps associated with the lock except for traps that are specifically disarmed through the use of the correct non-magical key. It only functions on mundane locks, not locks created with the Arcane Lock spell.

The spell must be cast within 30 feet of the target lock, or it fails, consuming the spell slot with no effect.
