You conjure a blazing-hot sphere of fire (about the size of a potato) and hurl it at a creature within range. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, they take 2d6 fire damage and must use their reaction (if available) to toss the burning potato to another creature within 15 feet. The new target must then make the same saving throw or take 2d6 fire damage and repeat the process. This continues until a creature succeeds on the save or there are no valid targets in range.
If a creature is unable to pass the potato, they take an additional 1d6 fire damage at the start of their next turn as the flames scorch them before fizzling out.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the initial damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.
