You coalesce necrotic energy into an orb of black flame, then hurl it towards a creature you can see within range. Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, the target takes 7d6 necrotic damage and has its hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken. Furthermore, the target is also incapacitated, as its body becomes engulfed by black flames that feed on its life force. An incapacitated creature can make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns. On a failed save, it suffers the necrotic damage and hit point reduction again. On a successful save, the spell ends.
A creature that touches an affected target, or ends its turn within 5 feet of it, must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, it suffers the effects of the spell, as the black flames spread through proximity.
If a creature is reduced to 0 hit points by this spell, it and any non-magical items it is wearing or carrying is reduced to ash. A target killed in this way can only be resurrected through True Resurrection, Wish, or Divine Intervention.
Remove Curse can end this spell early, and constructs, undead, and creatures under the effect of Death Ward are immune to the effects of this spell.
