Specifically, designed by schooler mages to make looking up information in a maze of research material quicker and easier. You write a word or phrase onto a piece of enchanted parchment, touch it as you cast the spell, and the words float off the parchment, seeking others like themselves in a 120ft sphere. Up to 6 words per parchment piece can be searched for. You can use multiple pieces in one casting for more words. The words don’t need to be found in order, or all together, unless the caster specifies this with quotation marks.

As you cast, you must hold the few words or phrase in your mind, and extend your consciousness out into the environment, bringing forth to your attention any written examples of your search phrase in your surroundings, whether they are written in books, tomes, scrolls or etched into stone. If there are any examples in the spell radius, your mind is pinged and the example location glows in your vision, letting you know precisely where it is, even through walls. The words continue to glow until you dismiss the spell as a free action or the spell expires. After casting, concentration on the searched phrase is no longer required. The search area ignores corners and natural barriers, but cannot penetrate lead, other planes of existence or an area specifically warded against divination magic.

The search phrase can be translated between languages, but only ones you know. A caster who knows Common and Elven for example, can write down their phrase in Common and examples written in both Common and Elven will be found, but not the same phrase translated to other tongues, such as Abyssal or Gnomish. The caster may choose to narrow their search to a specific language or languages, as long as they are fluent in all the tongues required.

If the phrase is in a language you don’t know, an adequate explanation from a creature that does understand the language can be enough to get the spell to work, however, your DM may ask you to make an intelligence check or similar to determine if you write down the script correctly, get the spelling correct and understand the phrase’s meaning adequately.

If you have 5GP worth of gem dust, you can use this spell to create the piece of enchanted parchment. Doing this consumes the gem dust.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the search area is increased by 120ft for every slot level above 1st, and may gain special control over the search query.

Author’s Notes: The enchanted parchment created/needed for this spell is called a Parchment of Searching and can also be found in my creations. I’d link it here but DnD Beyond doesn't let me share it if there are links.

* - (A peice of enchanted patchment, or a pinch of gem dust worth 5GP, which the spell consumes)
