You create a tattoo-like mark upon your body at a place of your choice. The mark has whatever appearance you want but cannot be more than 3 inches in length or width or diameter. Choose a spell of level 7 or lower that you can cast, that has a casting time of an action, and that can target you. You cast that spell—called the contingent spell—as part of casting Mark of Contingency, expending spell slots for both, but the contingent spell doesn’t come into effect. Instead, it takes effect when a certain trigger occurs. You describe that trigger when you cast the two spells. The trigger can be anything but must either be something perceptible from your space or be something that affects you. For example, a Mark of Contingency cast with Water Breathing might stipulate that Water Breathing comes into effect when you are engulfed in water or a similar liquid. If the contingent spell is a spell that would teleport you then the destination must be set at the time of casting Mark of Contingency - for example you could say '500 feet North' for a spell like Dimension Door or it could be a permanent Teleportation Circle, for which you know the sigil sequence, for a spell such as Teleport.
If the contingent spell requires Concentration it will no longer require concentration when triggered and will instead remain for the full duration. If the contingent spell has a duration longer than instantaneous or 1 round, you may choose to end it early as an action even if the spell normally cannot be ended early.
The contingent spell takes effect immediately after the trigger occurs for the first time, whether or not you want it to, and then Mark of Contingency ends.
The contingent spell takes effect only on you, even if it can normally target others. You can use only one Mark of Contingency spell at a time. If you cast this spell again, the effect of another Mark of Contingency spell on you ends. This has no interaction with the Contingency spell, allowing you to have both simultaneously. If the skin that bears the mark created by this spell is severely damaged or disfigured enough to significantly disrupt the mark then this spell on you ends. This spell can be dispelled only by Dispel Magic cast at 9th level. You can end the Mark of Contingency spell on you as an action. Whenever the Mark of Contingency spell ends on you the mark created by it disappears.
This spell cannot be cast by you if you have one or more levels of Exhaustion. When you cast this spell you gain 1d4+1 levels of Exhaustion.
