You release a small arc of lightning at a creature within range. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it takes 1d6 lightning damage, and the lightning arcs to another creature of your choice within 10 feet of the target. The second creature must also make a Dexterity saving throw, taking the same damage on a failure. The lightning can chain up to a maximum of three creatures, but a creature cannot be hit more than once per casting.
If a target succeeds on the Dexterity save, the chain does not continue. This spell cannot chain through full cover.
The spell’s damage increases at higher levels:
5th level: 2d6 lightning damage
11th level: 3d6 lightning damage
17th level: 4d6 lightning damage
