You challenge a casting spell with raw will. You and the triggering caster make an Arcane Dueling Check, each rolling 1d20 + spell attack modifier.
At Higher Level: If you cast arcane contention using a spell slot above 2nd, you gain +1 to your check per slot level above 2nd. Additionally, the range of the spell is extended by 30 feet for each spell level above 2nd, up to a maximum range of 120 feet.
Arcane Dueling Check. You and the target each make opposed spellcasting ability checks.
• Your check: d20 + your spellcasting ability modifier + the level of the slot you expended to cast this spell.
• Target’s check: d20 + its spellcasting ability modifier + the level of the spell it’s casting.
Outcome.
• You win: the spell fizzles; if it was cast with a slot, that slot isn’t expended.
• They win: the spell resolves; you take psychic damage equal to 1d6 per level of the spell (0 for cantrips).
• Exact tie: Initiate tiebreaker: both duelists immediately reroll, and each reroll in this chain applies a cumulative –1 to both checks until someone wins.
Limits. You must be able to perceive the casting.
