Developed by an illusionist as a training precursor to Color Spray, and while its effects are not as spectacular, Chromatic Flash still has practical battlefield uses.
You conjure a brief burst of dazzling color in front of a creature’s eyes, momentarily disrupting its visual focus. Choose one creature within range that you can see. The target is affected by a flash of light that interferes with one specific action or reaction involving sight.
-
If the target attempts an action or reaction that requires visual focus (such as making an attack roll, casting a spell that targets a creature, or making a Perception check), it has disadvantage on that action or reaction.
-
If the target is the subject of an attack or ability immediately following the flash, the attacker has advantage on that action.
-
If the target takes an action that causes another creature to make a Strength or Dexterity saving throw, that saving throw is made with advantage.
Special Rule:
-
The first time a creature is affected by Chromatic Flash, it does not receive a saving throw due to surprise.
-
On subsequent castings against the same creature, it must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw or be affected. A creature that succeeds on the save is unaffected, having anticipated the flash and closed its eyes briefly.
