You conjure a swirling vortex of brine and shadow at a point you can see within range. The water churns with unnatural force, laced with whispers from the deep that claw at the minds of those nearby.
Choose a 10-foot-radius. The area becomes difficult terrain and fills with spectral, brackish water. When a creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 4d6 bludgeoning damage and is pulled 5 feet toward the center of the vortex. On a successful save, it takes half damage and isn't pulled.
In addition, the first time a creature fails this saving throw each round, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or briefly hear whispers from the abyss: it hears maddening whispers and suffers disadvantage on its next attack roll or saving throw before the end of its next turn.
At Higher Levels.
When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the bludgeoning damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.
