You choose one nonmagical material, substance, or physical material within range—such as metal, stone, wood, soil, fabric, alchemical residue, or other nonliving matter—and analyse its properties.
If it is a complex object, you must touch a significant portion of the material you want to examine (for example, a sword’s blade, not its hilt).
You learn the following information about the material:
-
Its composition (e.g., iron, oak, marble, mithral).
-
Any unusual properties, such as being exceptionally hard, flexible, heat-resistant, flammable, toxic, or reactive.
-
Its quality or purity, such as whether it is refined, alloyed, contaminated, or counterfeit
This spell does not reveal magical properties, curses, enchantments, or information about a creature from which a biological sample was taken. For magical objects or enchanted materials, Identify is still required.
