The caster lashes out with a burst of destabilizing arcane energy, attempting to disrupt another caster’s spell as it forms.
When a creature within range begins casting a spell, you can use your reaction to cast Arcane Feedback. You and the target make opposed Feedback Checks.
Feedback Check:
A Feedback Check is:
1d20 + caster’s spellcasting ability modifier + the level at which Arcane Feedback is cast
The target makes a Feedback Check using:
1d20 + their spellcasting ability modifier + the level of the spell they are casting
Both results are then compared, with the following:
  • If your result is higher - The target’s spell is canceled, and the spell slot is expended.
  • If the target’s result is higher - The target’s spell continues normally and is not countered.
Psychic Backlash:
If either side loses the contest by 5 or more, the losing creature takes 1d6 psychic damage as the unstable arcane energy lashes back at them.  This damage increases to 2d6 at when cast at level 4, and 3d6 at level 6.
Natural 20 Surge:
If either creature rolls a natural 20, that creature automatically succeeds in the contest, regardless of modifiers.
The losing creature must then roll 1d8 on the Feedback Surge Table and suffers the listed effect until the end of their next turn.
Feedback Surge Table (1d8)
  1. Arcane Static - The creature’s thoughts fuzz with interference. They have disadvantage on their next attack roll or ability check.
  2. Etheric Whiplash - A jolt of force rattles their focus. They take 1d8 force damage.
  3. Spell Slippage - Their magical grip falters.  If they are currently concentrating on a spell it immediately drops.  If not they take 1d8 psychic damage.
  4. Feedback Echo - Their voice warps with residual magic. They cannot speak clearly enough to cast spells with verbal components until the end of their next turn.
  5. Arcane Drag - Their movements feel thick and heavy. Their speed is halved.
  6. Mind Rattle - Their concentration is shaken. They have disadvantage on concentration checks until the end of their next turn.
  7. Wild Pulse - Their magic flares unpredictably. The next time they cast a spell before the end of their next turn, roll a d4; on a 1, the spell fizzles and the slot is lost.
  8. Temporal Skip They stutter in time. They lose their reaction until the end of their next turn.
