You attempt to call the spirit of a humanoid that died recently, pulling them from the afterlife and manifesting their soul as a ghostly apparition. For the spell's duration, you can speak with the spirit using any languages it knew in life, but it is intangible and cannot be affect or be affected by the physical world, and it is under no compulsion to speak truthfully or to speak at all. Unlike Speak with Dead, this spell conjures the actual soul of the individual, not just their anima. When you cast this spell, you specify what kind of spirit you are trying to channel, which affects the outcome of the spell and the chance of success. You can attempt to channel the spirit of a specific person, a person who has died in your general area, or a lost soul. After successfully conjuring a spirit, if you know Magic Jar or Soul Cage, or if you possess an infernal reliquary, you can potentially bargain with the spirit to claim its soul.
If you attempt to channel the spirit of a specific person, you have a base success chance of 5%, increased by 20% if you know their name, increased by 25% if you knew them when they were alive, and increased by 25% if you can touch their corpse while casting this spell, with maximum success chance of 75%. If you attempt to channel a specific spirit and fail, you cannot attempt to contact them with this spell again. If the soul has already metamorphosized, such as becoming a demon, devil, archon, or returning to the fabric of the universe, the soul is aware that contact was attempted, but the spell fails. If the soul currently belongs to another entity, that entity can choose to appear to you for the spell's duration, their image projected by intangible, ghostly flames, and you may bargain with this entity to speak with or to claim the soul.
If you attempt to channel a local spirit, you have a base success chance of 40%, increased by 40% if the spell is performed in a crypt, graveyard, ancestral mound, or other burial site, the chance is increased by 40%, with a maximum success chance of 80%. These spirits are often displeased with the spellcaster for disturbing them, but can offer valuable information if appeased.
If you attempt to channel a lost soul, the spell is always successful, and you conjure a random, restless spirit that wants to avoid passing into the afterlife. In order to delay their fate, they will always accepts offers to take their soul, but their soul cannot be claimed permanently in this way, always returning immediately to the afterlife when their vessel is destroyed. Lost souls do not have any special talents or knowledge.
