You target the corpse of a creature that died within the last hour and that wasn't an Undead and had a Challenge Rating of 1 or lower when it was alive. The soul of the corpse makes a Charisma saving throw as it tries to resist returning from the dead. On a successful save, the spell fails, and it can't be targeted by this spell again.
On a failed save, the corpse rises as a Shadow under your control. It retains the statistics it had in life with the following exceptions:
- Creature Type: Its creature type is Undead.
- Damage Immunities: poison, psychic
- Condition Immunities: exhaustion, poisoned
- It can’t contract disease, doesn’t require sleep, and magic can’t put it to sleep.
- It can’t speak, but it understands the languages it knew in life. You can communicate with it telepathically while it is within 60 feet of you.
In combat, the Shadow shares your initiative count and takes its turn immediately after yours, obeying your commands (no action required by you).
As a Bonus Action, you can dismiss any number of Shadows you control created by this spell, causing them to vanish. As a Bonus Action, you can cause any dismissed Shadow to reappear in unoccupied spaces within 30 feet of you.
A Shadow created by this spell is destroyed when it drops to 0 Hit Points or when you release it from your control (no action required).
When a Shadow created by this spell would drop to 0 Hit Points, you can choose to take an amount of necrotic damage equal to your level, which can't be reduced in any way. If you do, the Shadow instead drops to 1 Hit Point.
You don't regain the spell slot used to cast this spell while a Shadow created by it remains under your control.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot: When you cast this spell using a higher-level spell slot, the maximum Challenge Rating of the target increases by 1 for each slot level above 1st.
