You create a 60-foot-radius sphere of supernatural darkness and illusion centered on a point you can see. The area is heavily obscured and blocks all nonmagical light. Creatures inside treat the area as magical darkness that even darkvision or truesight cannot penetrate without a successful DC 17 Wisdom (Perception) check (made with disadvantage).
Additionally, any creature that ends its turn in the area must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the darkness and incapacitated (as it hallucinates its deepest fears). Creatures that succeed are immune for 24 hours. You and up to 8 designated creatures are unaffected.
At Higher Levels: When cast with an 8th- or 9th-level slot, the radius increases by 30 feet per slot level above 7th, and the save DC increases by 1.
