The effect applied to them is chosen by the caster, and the form which it takes is willed by the target.
The target gains a +2 bonus to the related stat and resistance to the related damage type.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 3rd, and the maximum duration of the spell increases by one hour for each slot level above 3rd.
For a slot of 5th or higher, the bonus increases to +4, and those who would gain a bonus to skills other than dexterity receive a bonus to their AC as if having a +2 to their dexterity score if applicable.
