Consuming Vines

You point at a creature you can see within range, causing thick, predatory vines to erupt from the earth beneath them. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw.

On a failed save, the target takes 5d4 piercing damage and is pulled 5 feet straight down into the earth, becoming restrained and buried. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and is not pulled underground.

A buried creature has total cover, cannot move, and begins suffocating. At the start of each of its turns, the buried creature can make a Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC, digging itself out 5 feet on a success. If the creature fails this check, the tightening vines constrict, immediately dealing 2d4 bludgeoning damage to it.

While the creature is exactly 5 feet below the surface, an ally outside can use an action to make the same check to grab and pull the creature up 5 feet.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the initial damage increases by 2d4 and the constriction damage increases by 1d4 for each slot level above 3rd.
