You quiet your senses and deliberately open yourself to spirits, echoes, and other incorporeal presences beyond ordinary perception.

When you cast the spell, you may name a creature, place, object, event, or subject about which you seek insight, or you may simply open yourself to whatever presence is nearby.

The DM determines whether anything responds, the nature of the responding presence, and what information it is capable of providing. A response might come from the spirit of a deceased creature, a Fey presence, an echo of old magic, a memory impressed upon a place or object, or another supernatural presence appropriate to the circumstances.

Any communication may take the form of words, images, memories, emotions, sounds, sensations, symbolic visions, or other impressions chosen by the DM.

A responding presence isn't compelled to answer a particular question, reveal everything it knows, speak plainly, or speak truthfully. It can provide only information it could reasonably possess or perceive.

You may attempt to reach a particular spirit or presence, but this spell doesn't summon, bind, compel, or guarantee contact with it. Another presence may answer instead.

Communication can continue for the spell's duration, but the DM determines when a presence has nothing further to communicate or when contact ends.

Repeated Communion

The first time you cast this spell after finishing a Long Rest, there is no additional risk.

Each time you cast it again before finishing a Long Rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance that the communion becomes unstable. The DM makes this roll in secret.

On an unstable communion, the DM may cause the attempt to produce only confused or fragmented impressions, attract the attention of an unintended presence, or end without meaningful contact.

The chance resets when you finish a Long Rest.

Spiritual Sensitivity

This spell represents a deliberate attempt to reach beyond the veil. It doesn't limit supernatural perceptions that occur without the caster seeking them.

A creature naturally sensitive to spirits may still receive visions, impressions, emotions, voices, or other supernatural communications without casting this spell, at the DM's discretion.

* - (A small object used to focus communion, such as a bell, set of cards, bones, incense, or a musical instrument.)
