You transform sticks and other pieces of woods you can see within range into snakes and vice versa. When you cast the spell, choose one of the following options, the effects of which last for the duration of the spell.

For the purpose of this spell, a piece of wood is a loose stick, dead branch, torch, staff, spear, arrow, small log, etc., not an immovable plank making up part of a floor or a wall, a tethered door, a branch attached to a living tree, or a wooden object made up of multiple pieces of wood such as a chair or a table. Magic items are unaffected by this spell. If you carry sticks, you can scatter them within 10 feet of you as a bonus action before casting this spell.

Sticks to Snakes. You instantly transform 1d4 + 4 pieces of wood into poisonous snakes under your control. If the object is being either held or carried by an unwilling creature, that creature can make a Charisma saving throw. On a successful save, the object is unaffected. On subsequent turns, you can use your action to transform any target affected by this spell between its normal form and its new form.

The snakes are friendly to you and your companions. Roll initiative for the snakes as a group, which has its own turns. They obey any verbal commands that you issue to them (no action required by you). If you don't issue any commands to them, they defend themselves from hostile creatures, but otherwise take no actions. A snake reverts to its normal form when the spell ends or when its hit points drop to 0. A piece of wood that was damaged while in snake form has 1 hit point when reverting (see Object Hit Points, DMG ch. 8 for details). A damaged weapon or piece of ammunition has a permanent -3 penalty to damage rolls. At the DM's option, a weapon can be restored with a mending spell or the appropriate artisan tools.

When you create 10 or more snakes using a higher level spell slot, they gather into a swarm of poisonous snakes. The swarm of poisonous snakes follows the same rules as poisonous snakes created by this spell. The swarm of poisonous snakes gains bonuses depending on the number of snakes it is formed from. Snakes to Sticks.
You attempt to turn snakes into inert pieces of wood. When you choose this option, roll 8d8; the total is how many hit points of snakes you can affect. Creatures are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious snakes). Starting with the snake that has the lowest current hit points, each snake affected by this spell is transformed into a wooden object (e.g. stick, branch, log, etc.) equal to the size of its normal form. Subtract an affected creature's hit points from the total before moving on to the snakes with the next lowest hit points. A snake's hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that snake to be affected. This spell option has no effect on a shapechanger, a creature with 0 hit points, or a snake that isn't a beast.

While in wood form, the snake has vulnerability to fire. It has an Armor Class of 12 (for sticks) or 15 (for larger pieces of wood) and gains temporary hit points based on its normal size: 5, 10, 12 or 15 for a Tiny, Small, Medium, or Large snake respectively. These temporary hit points can’t be replaced by temporary hit points from another source. A target reverts to its snake form when it has no more temporary hit points or it dies. If the spell ends before then, the creature loses all its temporary hit points and reverts to its normal form.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher and choose the stick to snakes option, you can target an additional 1d4 pieces of nonmagical wood for each slot level above 2nd. If you choose the snakes to sticks option, roll an additional 2d8 for each slot level above 2nd.
