You choose a willing creature who would be hit by an attack, but before damage is dealt. The creature is enveloped by a cloak of comforting warmth. Roll 1d8 and add the number rolled to the target’s AC against that attack.
If the attack still hits, the target gains a spark of enduring resolve as the damage for that attack is reduced by the result of the initial roll.

Posted Jan 23, 2020At higher levels: For every level above 2nd the spell is cast, the amount added to AC and damage reduction increases by +1. At 9th level the spell then provides 1d8+7 AC and damage reduction. That is more than reasonable for a 9th level spell. The maximum amount of protection provided on a lucky roll at 2nd level now becomes the minimum due to upcasting. Adding 8 to the armor class of an ally is strong but not so much that it renders shield useless. A creature with plus 13 to hit (like some dragons) rolling a 10 on the d20 gets 23 attack roll. Let's say they are swinging at a druid with 16 AC. 7/8 times the attack still hits. You get the idea.
