Choose one humanoid corpse of Medium or Small size. This corpse reanimates and becomes under your control. The target creature retains the stats it had before dying, but is reanimated in the condition the corpse is found in when the spell is cast. The corpse must be in pristine condition when the spell is cast for the reanimated creature to be able to use any of its features and abilities. The corpse is reanimated with the same maximum hp it had in life, regardless of the corpse's condition. This creature retains all memories it had up to the moment of its death, but lacks the ability to learn or become more powerful, so it never increases its level or other abilities, nor can it regain expended spell slots.

As a bonus action on each of your turns, you can mentally command the creature you animated with this spell if the creature is within 1 mile of you. You decide what action the creature will take and where it will move during its next turn, or you can issue a general command, such as to guard a particular chamber or corridor. If you issue no commands, the creature would act on instinct as it would in life. Once given an order, the creature continues to follow it until its task is complete or until commanded otherwise.

As an action, you can see through the reanimated's eyes and hear what it hears until the start of your next turn, gaining the benefits of any special senses that the reanimated has. During this time, you are deaf and blind with regard to your own senses. Commanding a creature while seeing and hearing through it does not allow for fine control of the creature, but the creature will do its best to follow your commands.

The chains that bind this creature to undeath are attached to you. As an action, while in control of the reanimated creature, you may forfeit some of your own life force to heal the reanimated creature. You voluntarily take 4d6 necrotic damage, and the reanimated creature regains hit points equal to half the amount of necrotic damage you take.

The creature is under your control for 24 hours, after which it stops obeying any command you have given it. To maintain control of the creature for another 24 hours, you must cast this spell on the creature under cover of darkness before the current 24-hour period ends. The casting time of this spell is reduced to 1 minute when used to maintain control. The reanimated makes a Charisma saving throw against this control. On a failed save, the reanimated continues to obey you. On a successful save, your control of the reanimated ends. The magic that controls this undead is evil. An uncontrolled reanimated will be chaotic and hateful, attempting to kill everything it sees until it is destroyed. The maximum time you can hold control of a creature like this is one week, starting from the time of the first casting.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a 9th-level spell slot, you can reanimate the corpse any creature type, excluding constructs and undead.

* - (obsidian worth 2000 gp (one piece of which must be at least worth 1000 gp), the cremation ash of at least 10 unburied humanoid creatures mixed together and drawn into a ritual circle around the creature, the manacles or chains of a prisoner or slave who died wearing them, all of which the spell consumes.)
