Lightning
You hurl a spear of lightning at a creature or object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 minus 1d4 damage (minimum 1).
Unstable Arc: On a roll of a 4 on the d4 don't reduce the damage of the spell and you can also hit one additional creature or object within 10ft of the target for 4 damage (you can choose to hit the original target again).
If you target a creature wearing metal armour gain advantage on the attack roll.
This spell's damage increases by 1d10 when you reach 5th level (2d10), 11th level (3d10), and 17th level (4d10).

Posted Feb 12, 2020The theory behind this spell is that I'm not a fan of like for like reskins. If Gary and WOTC wanted us to have red fire bolt and green fire bolt and blue fire bolt they would have done that but they didn't.
This spell is generally fire bolt, it's a little weaker 3 in 4 turns but on that fourth turn it can hit hard (at least at lower levels). The basic logic behind it is that you lose 6 damage and gain 4 damage every four turns making a net loss of 2 damage over 4 turns or 0.5 damage a turn.
The difference works out a little lower than that because if you rolled a 1 on your d10, you can't reduce that damage (likewise a 2 on the d10 and a 2 or 3 on the d4 only reduces damage by 1 not 2 or 3). Also crits can hit harder when they come around (1 in 80 turns without advantage I know but it still adds up). All in its still roughly fire bolt but the small damage reduction let's you get the chance to arc the bolt into a nearby enemy of that's of any use at the time.
On the range / advantage, this was done for balance. The range has been reduced to a quarter of what fire bolt has to give the spell advantage against metal armoured targets.
