As part of casting the spell, the beholder eyestalks must be eaten. (There is fierce debate over how best to prepare the eyestalks for consumption. The most popular recipes dry them, grind them up, and add them to a hearty stew.) You may share the meal with up to three other intelligent creatures. Within a few minutes of consumption, one feels nauseous, then feverish, then quite tired, and compulsively seeks out a safe place to rest. If the spellcaster does not fall asleep within 10 minutes of eating the eyestalks, the spell fails.

Once asleep, anyone that took part in the meal finds themselves in a shared dreamscape with a spectator. To finish the summoning ritual, the summoner must convince the spectator to obey your commands. This is most commonly accomplished by defeating the aberration in combat, though clever spellcasters have been known to convince a spectator to obey them willingly.

Within the dream, a character retains all stats, bonuses and equipment they had when you fell asleep. The GM determines the nature of the dreamscape. Often it is both familiar and strange, incorporating the summoner's greatest desires and fears.

If a dreamer is reduced to 0 HP, they awaken immediately. The summoner may choose to awaken at any time, ending the dream and immediately awakening any creature still within the dreamscape. If the summoner awakens before the spectator submits, the spell fails.

When the spectator within the dream reaches 0 HP or agrees to obey the summoner, all creatures within the dream awaken and the spectator appears in an unoccupied space beside the summoner. The spectator will then guard a location or treasure for up to 101 years, allowing no creature but its summoner to enter the area or access the item, unless the summoner instructs otherwise. If the item is stolen or destroyed before the years have all passed, a summoned spectator vanishes. It otherwise never abandons its post.

If the spell fails for any reason, roll a d20. On a 1, a gauth uses the failed connection, arriving immediately or several minutes later. It might present itself as the spectator that the spellcaster attempted to summon, or it may simply demand a tribute. In either case, if it does not receive a steady supply of magical items to feed on, it will become hostile.
