You infuse yourself with raw magical energy, which can be released through a subsequent spell. For the duration, the next 1st level spell is cast as if you had used a 2nd level spell slot. If you do not cast a 1st level spell within the duration, you take 2d6 force damage, you foolish mage.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this with a higher level spell slot, the next spell of the same spell level is cast as if you had used a spell slot one level higher, up to a maximum of 9th level. The force damage from failing to cast a spell increases by 1d6 for each level above 1st.
